Game Plan

Rootha, Mastering the Moment chains cheap instant and sorcery spells into a growing Elemental token each combat, converting mana value into board pressure and damage. The deck wins by either assembling a two-card combo (Niv-Mizzet, Parun + Curiosity or Niv-Mizzet, Visionary + Niv-Mizzet, Parun for infinite draw and damage) or grinding the table down through repeated spell-fueled payoffs like Guttersnipe, Metallurgic Summonings, and Rionya, Fire Dancer.

How It Wins

Fast mana setup: Sol Ring and Arcane Signet deploy early, letting you cast Rootha by turn 3 and begin the spell chain. The spell engine: Once Rootha is online, each instant or sorcery you cast triggers Rootha's combat ability, creating an Elemental token whose power equals the highest mana value spell cast that turn. Brain Freeze, Underworld Breach, and March of Swirling Mist are load-bearing pieces—Brain Freeze storms the table and mills opponents (scaling with spell count), Underworld Breach recasts spells from your graveyard at a discount, and March of Swirling Mist phases out blockers while costing less for each blue card you exile. Payoff density: Metallurgic Summonings creates artifact tokens for each spell cast (scaling with mana value), Renegade Bull pumps itself and exiles/copies spells from your graveyard on attack, and Rionya, Fire Dancer copies your best creature once per spell cast that turn. Tutors lock consistency: Merchant Scroll, Mystical Tutor, and Personal Tutor find your combo pieces or key payoffs on demand. The combo kill: If you assemble Niv-Mizzet, Parun + Curiosity, drawing a card triggers Niv-Mizzet's damage ability (1 to any target), which triggers Curiosity to draw again—infinite card draw and damage.
